I was selected to join the 2026 Research Science Institute, organized by CEE, to spend six fun and challenging weeks at MIT.

Research Science Institute 

During RSI, I joined MIT's Multidisciplinary Simulation, Estimation, and Assimilation Systems (MSEAS) laboratory. Led by Prof. Pierre Lermusiaux, the MSEAS group specializes in developing advanced mathematical models and data assimilation schemes to predict complex ocean behaviors across multiple scales. Over my six weeks there, Akhil, a Ph.D. student, mentored me in computational oceanography. Our research focused on evaluating and enhancing a custom diffusion model to improve its accuracy in predicting ocean motion and reconstructing flow fields.

Abstract / Summary

Satellite measurements observe the ocean in narrow swaths and leave large gaps between measured regions. We test whether a computer model guided by measurements can fill in the gaps in a map of ocean motion. Using a simplified simulation of ocean motion, we find that increasing the observed information improves reconstruction accuracy. The results also identify saturation points, which differ across settings, beyond which further observations produce little additional change in reconstruction error. At similar observed area, smaller and more widely distributed observations generally produced more accurate reconstructions than fewer, larger observations. We train a model on real ocean data to generate complete field estimates. The model produces blurry results that do not closely match the original ocean motion. Therefore, improving this model and conducting systematic error analysis across multiple ocean fields are important directions for future work.

iGEM

My research experience throughout high school has focused on vision impairment and plastic pollution, two issues of great urgency and global impact. Both of my research projects were done in the iGEM competition, which won a silver and a gold medal respectively. In the most recent project that earned a gold medal, my team successfully introduced a synthetic β-carotene biosynthetic pathway into Saccharomyces cerevisiae with CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing to enable the de novo synthesis of β-carotene. On the wet-lab side, I worked with our de novo β-carotene strains to generate the core performance data. On the dry-lab side, I led the development of our smart camera-based monitoring system.

Robotics

Ever since I was a child, I’ve always loved science, and I joined a robotics team at age 11. I've been drawn to the challenge of identifying a problem and working with a team to solve it, and FTC provided the ideal platform to develop those skills. On the team, I’ve served as both a programmer and an outreach lead.

FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC)  &  FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC)

  • 2025 FIRST Championship Qualifier (Houston): Advanced to the World Championship level, competing against top international teams.

 

  • FRC China Off season Event (2024-2025): Finalist Alliance (2nd Place) at the national level.

 

  • FTC China Remote Championship (2019-2021): Winning Alliance (1st Place) in the national championship.

 

  • Consistent Excellence: Achieved multiple Top 3 rankings at various national qualifiers and championship tournaments over the past 6 years.
